I remember seeing augmented reality on the droid does page as well, but it may have disappeared when it actually came out

If I'm not mistaken, Nokia has a similar app. You might find it under the beta apps website.

An android app called PlinkArt (http://www.plinkart.com/) already does this for paintings. It was one of the winners of the recent android developer challenge.
