Noam Cohen has a story in the New York Times titled "‘Suicide’ Query Prompts Google to Offer Hotline". http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/05/technology/05google.html
Searching [suicide] in the USA produces an icon of a red phone with the phone number for the USA national suicide hotline 800-273-TALK 800-273-8255. http://www.google.com/search?q=suicide&gl=us&num=1 http://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/
Searching [poison help] in the USA produces an icon of Mr. Yuk with the phone number for the USA national poison control center 800-222-1222. http://www.google.com/search?q=poison+help&gl=us&num=1 http://www.aapcc.org/DNN/
Maybe they could integrate these into Google Voice, Google phones, and GOOG-411.
I searched google.ca (Canada) with no special result. I searched google.com with Spanish words [suicidio] and [ayudar a veneno] without the special hotline results. |
DPic, was it ironic, "ironic," sincere or "in earnest"? Couldn't tell. We all know Google cooks results depending on context [in languages it has mastered – it's not a given that all flagged words in English get equal special treatment in other languages], so what else could we expect of it in this particular case, leading links to http://www.depressed.net/suicide/suicidefaq/index.html OR http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alt.suicide.holiday ? |
It was sincere but as writing it i thought it might appear sarcastic. I have, and know many others who have gone through tough times.
It's also interesting that while Google does this, Facebook deleted my ten-thousand member-strong community for suicide and depression awareness and support and banned me for ten months instead of removing the people who came into the group to harass people |
