Google service launced it's own alert
I run a few test's and plugin my area's:

*backlink update
*trend
*search tips
http://www.google.com/alerts

So fare no backlink update nota :O)
and I figure out that I have to be more accurate
otherwise you get a lot of examble's. (to wide)
(actually some of the PPC link where best)

The old independent service:
http://www.googlealert.com/

I dont know if this one will survive,
because of competition from G'
but they have another aproach to the word alert
simply by buzz you when your PR suffer.

I dont think G' will buzz you when your
PR suffer or your backlink's increase/decrease

I'm not sure either if Google Alerts (former Googlert) will survive, even though they may have some extra features. After all Google gives developers the API to be inspired, and this time it paid back for them too!
