How to BEST embed audio in html

So I've been playing around with embedding sound in HTML ... it seems to work fine for me, but some people say they get an Active-X warning, which makes it look like I'm trying to do something nefarious.

So I have setup a stripped down example – please see:
   http://www.komar.org/audio/
as it used the embed command to load the .wav files, and as noted on the page, should play a sound on page load, and then also mouse overs for the text and image.

This plays sounds for me fine (both FF and IE) with no Active-X popup in the later ... how well does this work for others? And is there a "standard" way to embed sound in HTML this is semi-universal across browsers.

I'm getting one of those "additional plug-ins needed" messages here on Firefox. A great way to test your page on different browser's/ OS's default settings btw is BrowserPool: http://browserpool.de/kc/wob/portal.jsp?lang=en

In general, I'd say Flash is the best way to embed sound, but only if you know Flash or have friends who do :)
Other than that probably some mixture of embed or object elements or bgmusic but I tried to solve this last a long time ago, on Monday, April 28 1997, to be exact (ah, where would I be without Google Groups). :)

I looked at some of that, but didn't see a concise example of how to embed audio in HTML so you can javascript OnMouseOver handle it – here is an example page of what I'm looking for:
   http://www.phon.ucl.ac.uk/home/mark/audio/play.htm

I think the problem that is cropping up is some folks don't have their browsers to handle all types of audio – unfortunately, there are all sorts of formats out there.

I just created a NEW test page if you guys can try it out:
   http://www.komar.org/audio/index2.html

Difference is that instead of using .wav files, it uses .mp3. Would like to know if Philipp (and others) still get that popup – I'm assuming that you can normally play .mp3's and I added a link (no js) to test that.

Yep. still getting the yellow top-bar in Firefox. I usually only see it on my girlfriend's computer and then tell her to stay away from the site, as it might be spyware! ;)
