I was intrigued to see the interactive map being used in Local, as I've just discovered a way to achieve the same thing off the Gmaps site with custom data and stylesheets (no browser hacks either).

Phil, today I was thinking if it would be possible to screen-scrape the Gmaps data, and then use your own server with database backend to let people put their own flags on it (e.g. to show where a blogger lives – to show what's happening in a city – and similar). Sort of a social Google Maps... |
