To optimize for Google, use htaccess URL rewriting to make for URLs like these:
www.hashkafah.com/topic-8348/page-2/

Google can handle several parameters (up to 2 is a good limit), but it de-values them in my experience (PageRank etc.)

use htaccess URL rewriting, please forgive my ignorance, but what does that mean?

If you have an Apache server, you can use the ".htaccess" file and then rewrite URLs. Just google for

htaccess url rewriting

and similar, you should get a lot of info! It doesn't work like that on a Windows-server however...
