I read a tremendous book exploring synesthesia several years ago called The Man Who Tasted Shapes. It is a very interesting phenomenon/condition.
here's the book:

There is an interesting theory about it that was invented in the 70s. I forget who invented it, but I know that a book that focuses on it, among other amazing ideas: On Intelligence, by Jeff Hawkins, who invented the Palm Pilot.

I'm personnaly a synesthete. I see color in voyels : a is red, e is black, i is white, o is yellow and u is blue. Since I have difficulty remembering names, I use this to my advantage : people's name turn out as color scheme. But sometimes this can be tricky since a single color scheme can be associated with many names... Cheers... "red and white"... as in Zalphis...

I read an aticle about this like 2 months ago – i think it was in Scientific America MIND – interesting read

psychadelic drug users (on LSD or similar psychoreactive drugs) also report having hallucinations the same way

I have Synesthesia too. I see the numbers 0-9 as specific colours and numbers after that usually have the largest number in the multi-digit number or the first number in the multi-digit number as its colour. I also see letters like that too only on a lesser scale.
