In case anybody's interested, I've just developed a Python script that enables basic programmatic access to retrieving Gmail mail messages. I've put it in a Usenet posting (titled "[ANN] libgmail 0.0.1 – Gmail access via Python") to comp.lang.python until I find a home for it.
Since Philipp was nice enough to give me an invite I thought I'd mention it here. (Well, okay, so it's any excuse for a plug...)
Ensure you understand the Google terms of service before use.

After sleeping on it I've realised I'm actually only retrieving the conversation threads from the inbox, not all the messages. At present this means you'll get one message from each thread, not all messages.
It looks like for a single message "conversation" the thread id == message id, but not for a mulltiple-message conversation.
At this stage it seems like you have to open a conversation thread to get all the message ids, but I'll look into it.
I'm partway through setting up a SF project too.
