Repeat after me:

I don't trust Alexa's numbers and rankings. They are not accurate.

I hate both Orkut and MySpace. For different reasons though.

MySpace is too yucky and allows its users far too much chance to change the look of their pages. Most of them have horizontal scrollbars for instance. And music playing automatically.

Orkut doesn't allow much customisation. But it is just plain ugly. It uses way to many images in its design. And it has this odd style for the first letter in a sentence. It is horrible.

Just cos lots of people in Brazil have decided to get the Alexa extension, it doesn't mean Orkut is going anywhere.

FWIW, there was the XSS Hack which produced cloned profiles .. this could throw the orkut figures askew

Seems fair, but Page Views have also increased.

Thanks Ionut!

Although saddened by the real position of Orkut (which is lacking traffic wise) I think I am going to refer to HitWise from now on for traffic details.

The HitWise numbers are for the US only.
Orkut is more popular outside the US in
Brazil, India, Iran etc. Similarly, Cyworld
is popular in Korea.

I don't think that MySpace or Facebook or any
of the other outfits have any kind of significant
presence in South America, South Asia (India/Pak),
China/Japan/Korea, South-East Asia, Middle East,
non-Western Europe/Russia etc. And it is these
places that are growing the fastest in terms
of Internet user population.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orkut says that US is the 2nd country after Brazil, in terms of users (13%). The total no of users is around 28,000,000 while MySpace has more than 100,000,000.

My point is that the HitWise data is for the US
which is a relatively saturated market, and
likely to be a smaller piece of the pie as time
goes on.

The fastest Internet growth is going to be outside
the US in the coming years. E.g., China.

of change:
