I note that the Google Teaching Academy which is part of this program requires applicants to submit a 1 minute video with their application.

http://www.edgateway.net/cs/google/print/docs/754

There are no instructions on how to do this beyond:

"Once you create the video, you must find a way to post it on the Web for us to view or download, then paste the URL for your video into the appropriate field on the application. We will not accept videos by email, and we will not watch more than one minute. So, make it count!"

I guess they only want applications from teachers who are smart enough to work out how to do this for themselves.

Haha, so they basically want young teachers.

I was amused to notice that in the Google Blog entry they suggest looking at what newspapers in Virginia were saying about the Civil War. So I ran a search (which they don't actually think to link to – I'd have been interested in what they would have come up with), and sure enough – loads of stuff. Every single one of the first 30 results was subscription only. When are they actually going to *think* before they blog?

Loren Baker of Search Engine Journal comments:

<<Sure, Google is an information and research centered company, but the Google Certified Teachers program conjures up memories of In-School Marketing such as Coke Machines in the cafeterias, Book Covers sponsored by Nestle or Dominos Pizza, and the Apple (Computer) for a Teacher programs.

Marketing to school children is a fairly old tactic and can be done tastefully, remember those Scholastic Magazines, but we must remember that search engines are also a multi-billion dollar business and by harnessing the influence of teachers, Google is essentially cutting out the middle man and going directly to the talking heads who teach our children.>>
