I can't log in with my gmail account, neither can I sign up.

Yeah, it works! You don't need invites to sign-up. I can sign-up/sign-in with my Gmail account.

I wonder (hope) this is the first step in a major Orkut upgrade. During Google's earnings conference they talked about trying to centralise sharing all of your Google hosted 'stuff' (Photos, video, documents, coop, pages, blogger, ...) all in one place. Seems to me Orkut *could* provide a perfect place to centralise stuff about You. With video/photos/etc all integrated within your Orkut profile.

Of course, Orkut needs a fair bit of work before that happens, but hopefully this is a sign that it's not been relegated to the dustbin...

Hopefully Orkut will integrate YouTube (in someway)

Will Orkut become the myspace competetion ?

Are you kidding? It might be better coded, but it's Myspace for geeks. Let's face it.

At home now, I too can't seem to log in with my Google account, nor can I signup. Signing in with my G account asks me to connect it to my Orkut account (which I don't have). Clicking 'join Orkut' tells me I need an invite!

I had to same problem, but searching on google gave me this adres: http://www.orkut.com/JoinCreate.aspx?id=438A55370AE6F6E6&acc=true
Which show a page with a iframe that show an invalid request. If you play the url (remove migrate=true, reqemail=blaat) so you get this one:

(I added returns)

https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLoginBox?service=
orkut&nui=2&
&continue=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.orkut.com%2FRedirLogin.

rl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.orkut.com%2FJoinCreate.aspx%3Fid

www.orkut.com
%2FRedirLogin.aspx%3Fmsg%3D1%26id%3D438A55370AE6F6E6

sig=ff6ef8befac70a34a31586a1e935461f'

I was then able to sign up but supplying my gmail account info.

I think Orkut would be an ideal place for this. Also, if we could choose to integrate our blogger accounts within, Orkut would quickly become a hot spot for G-fans and Y-haters (G for Google and Y for Yahoo).

I think what Orkut needs is a tag to allow video's to be seen in the forums, or at least allow users to add them manually (like they do on Joga).

"The invitation was one of the reasons behind orkut's failure to compete with MySpace. Now that Facebook is also public, the competition will start to become interesting"

Interesting that I raised the same question here wrt to orkut vs Myspace

and its seemed "Are you kidding?"

Dodgeball +Orkut+GVideo can be a social killer!!

With the recent changes to Dodgeball meaning you can sign in using your Google Account, it wouldn't surprise me if they're looking at hooking it up with Orkut... especially with Orkut seemingly getting more attention from Google these days.

[Moved from "Orkut Opens for all" – Tony]

I am not sure if this is already discussed in the blog or the forum, but orkut has recently opened up for allhaving google accounts

My post on it is here :

It does not work for me. I don't have an Orkut account, and the log in says I need to link my Orkut account to my Gmail account. Apparently all that has changed so far is to allow you to use your Google account log in to your Orkut account.

This is the message I got:
"
Help
Link your orkut account to your Google Account

All orkut users must now use Google Accounts to sign in. Please enter your orkut username and password below to link your orkut login to your Google Account. Once you've done so, you'll be able to use your Google Account to sign in to orkut and numerous other Google services. If you have any questions, please view our FAQ." I had to change the word "visit" to "view" to post the quote here.
