Converting AVIs?Philipp Lenssen | Monday, November 13, 2006 17 years ago • 5,525 views |
Does anyone know how to convert these to other formats, like MPG or WMV?

I can't play them in Windows Media Player or open them in Windows Media Maker. I can only open them in the DivX player, but the DivX converter shows an "unknown error" when opening them.

I'm looking for a conversion utility myself too. I have an wmv and it should be converted to mpg to create a DVD. Or if you know some freeware that can make a DVD from a wmv file, that should do too ;-)
(Sorry for the OT thing, but Philipp started ;-)) |

Thanks Pokemo! I was actually trying to convert this to WMV/ video... |

Yeah.. I'd like to convert to WMV so I can play them on my Windows Media Center PC over the XBox360.. This is REALLY important for me. I do know that Vista will stream DivX though. Which is very good. |

Strange, ConvertMovie 4.3 omits the sound when converting to WMV... |

Philipp, Could you post a little write-up on your main Blog about this conversion process?? I crawled the internet for a long time trying to find a solution for converting AVI --> WMV. All I could find was spammy looking software which I wasn't too interested in. I think the post would help a lot of people. |

I recommend that anyone with command line experience tries FFMPEG.
Failing that, www.doom9.org has a selection of useful guides |

Justin, I just tried ConvertMovie per the advice above, but the sound was missing... I did use the trial version though, I didn't buy it yet... |

There's something called Switch. The Basic Version works pretty well.

I downloaded the first of the videos and I was able to open/play and re-encode in a program called 'SUPER'. It was able to make the video into a working .WMV. The website to download SUPER is: http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html |

VLC will play everything. |

SUPER is just a GUI to FFMPEG (and a few other utilities). In my opinion, FFMPEG command line gives better quality and more control over file size |

Yeah, I always use ffmpeg. It comes with my Linux distribution and can convert almost everything to everything. I believe there is Windows version. |
Stephen Tordoff | 17 years ago # |
Yeh, a windows version is freely available, and it comes with nearly all Linux distros. Best of all, it converts (nearly) everything and is free
