I think you're right Philipp. Yahoo does tend to buy communities – and also more established companies and sites. Google tends to go for the start-ups which so promise.
Google take the risks whereas Yahoo will spend a little more money after the company/idea has proven itself. In Larry and Sergey wrote, "We will not shy away from high-risk, high-reward projects because of short term earnings pressure." in their letter to investors for the IPO.
What about YouTube? That does go somewhat against the trend but doesn't disqualify the trend. YouTube's staff count was relatively small. The deal was $1.6bn in shares (bold of YouTube to accept that) which pales against the ~$1.2n in actual money for dMarc. Google buying YouTube is akin to Google moving to Usenet's archives or even Blogger. |
