To summarize it for the casual reader: It sucks.

Very, very, funny. Says Kraut.

It seems that http://beta.volltextsuche-online.de now has a new password. At least I am unable to log in.

[put at-character here]Tadeusz: I am not sure if that summary is representing what I wrote (apart from "it sucks" could expose the author to a legal liability, slander... libel .. yaddayadda). Even if it does, the reasons for this situation are much more interesting than the status itself. The Börsenverein would not be the first/last one attempting to unseat Google in whatever in a rather clueless way...

hey mathias
see my post on http://www.lovelysystems.com/breidenbruecker/2007/02/15/vto-the-german-google-book-search-killer/ lovely. Btw... your blog supporting trackbacks? Anyway. Great story, good work. So you guys are really fans of google? Good. But in this case good for the world too? The börsenverein people might not manage the job but they are still the only people i m aware of at the moment who manage to stand against google. Google is aggregating content all over the world and we are all witnessing how they are buying out whole online markets like e.g. video.... so here we have a project which is trying to put some competition against google... what is bad about that?

There is nothing wrong with competition per se. And even Google claims that the more "digitalization projects" are there, the better (by the way, this is exactly my position when it comes to Wikipedia forks).

However, I would like to see the full picture of VTO. I would not yet call it "fatally flawed", even if some people might think that all the information available just points to that conclusion. This is why I asked the people at the Börsenverein more than once for information. And this is why I will continue to see what kind of progress they make, on the technical, the economical and the political side.

short correction: the first version or the article read: "legal basis for this injunction and in order to lose before court". There was one "not" missing. It has been edited now.

No, but relevant links like yours are welcome in the comments...

> So you guys are really fans of google?

No, there will be positive and negative coverage of Google products, depending on what Google does. (E.g. http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2006-02-18-n18.html and http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2007-01-10-n14.html).

hey
thanks for coming back about my comment here and also on my blog... i posted another comment on my post at http://www.lovelysystems.com/breidenbruecker/2007/02/15/vto-the-german-google-book-search-killer/ (sorry to mention the same url again), maybe we can get some proposals about possible solutions of the technical problems of VTO. I know for sure that the responsible people are having a very close look at our discussion.... so maybe we can make a difference here ;-)

mathias: you are mentioning the political progress... well i guess your post had quite big impact on the political progress. Maybe you saw that your story was picked up by the press and some of them are already talking about trojans in vto, which is very stupid. Knowing how sensitive publishers and writers (and basically the rest of the book industry) is about this topic i can just guess that a lot of people have a lot of work now to get the responsible people back on the table. I think the technical problems of the systems are possible to solve, the political problems might be more difficult to solve.

The weakest link of this project is the politics of right holders and i guess google knew that very well and therefor started it all in libraries and not by talking to publishers and writers. VTO is trying to go the different path.
