Getting rid of Nazis is something we are trying for decades now. If Google succeeds, I hope they will share their strategy :)

Actually thats very bad to get rid of the Nazis-- why are we trying to scrub clean history ?

Some 10 years down the timeline, will it be "Al Queda" ?

The fabric of community and society needs to learn to live with past historical mistakes , else how will the future generations future kids) learn if all the data on past mistakes are wiped clean ??

Of course no one is trying to scrub clean history.

It is a simple fact that the name of the mountain is not Hitlerberg, it is Hegelkopf. Therefore, Google needs to fix their data.

It's just like the "Arabian Gulf" mistake that National Geographic (of the US) made a few years ago. There is no "Arabian" gulf, only the "Persian" one.

Hitler was a very important person in history, and I believe that if enough work was put in to name a mountain after him, it would be respectful to leave the name.

"respectful to leave the name" ??

Nawwwwwwwwway.. I tend to disagree. Its like saying lets name a city (somewhere on earth) – called as "Osma bin Laden" as he is an important person and that fought the Americans and caused 911.

That's freakin ridiculous!!

I think keepping the real history records is right. We can not change the history, why change the history records?

1.Change the label on the Google earch to "Hitler mount(1933-1945 or other time range)", then marked with current name.

2.Also like "Censorship", Google Earth can back different results to different users.

It is important to censor historical people and events that you disagree with in order to show disrespect for their cause. It is even better to be ignorant of their foundational ideas and to promote oversimplified cliches in their place, as well as irrational hostility towards them so that no one thinks for themselves.

For example, how many people are familiar with the 25 points of National Socialism? This is what the Nazis movement was based on, but instead their motivation is claimed to be world domination, war and murder, as if a peace-loving people would elect such a platform or allow it to exist without social benefit.

Replacing historical truth with a dumbed down version for children only ensures that people are told confusing lies that don't make sense in the larger scheme of world history. Good work censors!

The motivation of those who tolerate censorship is to get revenge on thinkers with whom you disagree. You are the haters of truth and honest discourse.

News.com coverage (based to Reuters article) here:
http://news.com.com/2102-1025_3-6165950.html?tag=st.util.print

"Google Germany spokesman Stefan Keuchel said the Hitler name had appeared due to a "technical accident." The company was investigating and would consider deleting the reference if there was no historical reason for its inclusion."

History can not back. Nazis lost cause their anti-human. Besides this, Hitler still remained many for us to learn.

Also, for the political structure, Nazi is bad. It is powerful, but in the wrong way. Nazi anti-human broken the health of the German econmy.

Topic so far now.

We should not cleanse history for the sake of someone choice. The mountains name was changed by a government that was in charge at the time. The name was given back after that, but does that change the fact that the name was changed, no. The people who want the change are possibly afraid that the name Hitler will put a stain on their area. Just because we don't like history, doesn't give you the right to change it. The search engine should still recognize the name and it shouldn't be deleted.

The issue is not about "cleansing history". Google Earth uses modern placenames. It can't possibly record all the various names which have been used for every geographical feature throughout history. Would you propose labelling New York with the placenames which native Americans used to refer to its various islands before Europeans arrived? In fact, shouldn't New York also be refered to as "New Amsterdam"?

The historical detail might be interesting in a Wikipedia entry, but not in Google Earth.

The Persian Gulf/Arabian Gulf issue, on the other hand, is not a mistake, but a highly political controversy..... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_Gulf_naming_dispute
