Doesn't look like Google SMS is going to be available in the UK for a long time.

Weird, we used to have it in the UK. You used to be able to text 64664 (6GOOG) and your keywords to get search results, local results, etc.

In fact, here's the quick reference sheet:

Having said all that, I seem to remember them withdrawing it a while back...
