http://googlified.com/files/google-latlog-blog.jpg <<Welcome to the Google "geo" blog. As web mapping (dare I say "the geoweb"?) matures, we're finding that we have a lot more to communicate about new developments in Earth, Maps, Local, and our APIs.>> http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2007/05/new-world-unfolding.html That's one weird name... |
Guessing it stands for Latitude and Longitude – maybe Google is trying to say that it can still do unusual names – let's just hope it doesn't get renamed in a couple of years to Google Earth and Maps Blog or something equally dull.
I wonder if it means the Google earth community will be moved over to Google Groups and the news that is provided through the BBS will be posted on the LatLong Blog.
Seems odd that Google has kept the Keyhole/Google earth forum seperate from Google groups for so long.

I can just imagine this as a future post on the blog....
"After four months of being called the Lat Long Blog, we've change our name! This reflects new user experience studies, that prove that having a name that people understand is quite a good idea. (Re)introducing Earth & Maps Blog!"
but then...
"We've now decided the Earth & Maps blog name isn't too catchy. We've used a different name internally for a while now – but now's the time make it public. Welcome to iGeoBlog".
(Sorry, I couldn't resist) |
If the issue raised by John Hanke "What is the GeoWeb?" interests you, I suggest you checkout the GeoWeb 2007 Conference at http://www.geoweb.org. This is the key event for looking at the convergence of the Web and all things Geo. It is an international event – last year (GeoWeb 2006) drew people from more than 20 different countries. Can you afford to miss it? |
The LatLong blog name resonates perfectly with Maps API developers, who frequently use GLatLng to store their points, and call their point variables things like 'var latlng.' Maps.google.com stores its coordinates in the url in the 'll' parameter (standing for latitude/longitude). I don't know if 'LatLong' has the same level of recognition with the GEarth crowd – lat/long coordinates are ordered long, lat in KML files.
Much of the BBS keyhole community may now be in the KML Google Group now, by the way: http://groups.google.com/group/kml-support?lnk=srg

<< The LatLong blog name resonates perfectly with Maps API developers >>
I thought that wasn't the target audience, though. I thought they would prefer to read the Maps API blog instead. Is it worth switching that one to the LatLong blog to save space on the Google servers? :) |
