Google Gadgets

After 654 questions answered and 4.86 out of 5 stars, Google Answers Researcher Pinkfreud has a Google blanket, Google T-shirt, Google mouse pad, Google pen, Google coasters, and Google wristwatch. (I can’t compete with just a Google Pen and blanket.) You can buy most of the Google accessories in the Google Store, but only as Google Answers Researcher will you get them send over for free!

How Much Information

According to “How Much Information 2003?” (by faculty and students at the School of Information Management and Systems at the University of California at Berkeley):

• The size of the Internet as of 2002: The Surface Web has 167 Terabytes, and the Deep Web (database-driven pages created on demand) has 91,850 Terabytes.
• The size of new Information 2003: Five Exabytes. An Exabyte is even bigger than a Petabyte* and has 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes and equals half a million new libraries the size of the Library of Congress print collections, or all words ever spoken by humans.
• Usage of search engines by those with Internet access: 29% (as of January 2002)
• Google search hours per month: 18.7 million. (source: SearchEngineWatch.com, February 2003)
• Web Domains (www.whois.net): 31,987,198.
• Blogs: 2.4 to 2.9 million active weblogs (source: June 2003, Phil Wolff) – about 2% of Internet users write blogs, and about 4% read them (source: Jupiter Research).

A Petabyte – 10₁₅ bytes – could just store about half of all U.S. academic research libraries. A Terabyte would only be about half of one of those libraries, and a Gigabyte is just a pickup truck filled with books.
