I asked how the PageRank tool previously mentioned works, and this answer in alt.internet.search-engines gives a clue:
“At least we know half the answer. If you want to get the PageRank of, say
www.htmldog.com, you enter:
http://66.102.9.99/search?client=navclient-auto&googleip=O;66.102.9.99;671&c
h=6140858434&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&features=Rank&q=info:http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ehtmld
og%2Ecom%2F
The result is “Rank_1:1:6” so the PageRank is 6.
The tricky part is “ch=6140858434”.
This is some kind of check sum, and only Google knows how it’s calculated.”

“Google Local integrates yellow pages-style information right into
your search. Search for pizza 90210 or
macaroni stanford, ca and up will
pop a little compass with a couple results.”
– Aaron Swartz, Local Goes Live (Google Weblog), March 17, 2004
Nice, though it doesn’t work outside the US (which naturally makes this a meaningless feauture for large parts of the world).
