Google Will Eat Itself

GWEI (short for “Google will eat itself”) aims to deconstruct new global advertisment mechanisms by rendering them into a surreal click-based economic models. And how do they do it?

“We generate money by serving Google text advertisments on our website GWEI.org. With this money we automatically buy Google shares via our Swiss e-banking account. We buy Google via their own advertisment! Google eats itself – but in the end we will own it!”

And on their theory page, GWEI states:

“Google’s position is predominant in the same moment it entered a new business field with a new service. It’s the Google effect: creating consensus on a new business, even if it instantly got the predominant position. The greatest enemy of such a giant is not another giant. It’s the parasite. If enough parasitites would suck small amount of money in this self-referentialism embodiment, they will empty this artificial mountain of data and its inner risk of digital totalitarianism.”

GWEI comes complete with a “fake” front-page citing Search Engine Watch, Slashdot and others. From the looks of it their AdSense account will be quickly terminated by Google; if nothing else, TET – their “Traffic Enhancement Tool” – automates traffic. In fact, I can’t even see any AdSense anymore on the random pages, unless I’m checking the HTML source.

In the meantime, acquired shares of Google will be owned by the GTTP-community; “Google for the people.” And the GWEI Exhibition projects the whole thing on museum walls, it seems. While this could be considered an elaborate prank and artful media hack, there are still real people paying for every click on Google AdSense ads: the advertisers who are buying their AdWords.
