Google Local Ads

Google Local now shows ads on the map for some queries. For example, entering “hotels” in “New York, NY”, I can see four blue markers on the map. To the left side, there are two blue ads accompanying the markers. The ads read, “W Hotel Tuscany” and “Courtyard Manhattan Hotel.” Clicking on the blue pins opens up the typical Google Local/ Google Maps infobox, plus a hotel logo.

I guess it was only a matter of time for this to happen. Did anyone see those ads “in the wild”, that is, on Google Maps API driven sites?

By the way, if you’re not seeing the ads at all – like Gary Price and Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Watch – then it might be Google is slowly rolling out this feature or still in an experimental test phase. [Thanks Gary, Didier.]
