Robert Jamieson reports on how a Google map dropped the Martin Luther King Jr. Way South in Seattle, renaming it back to Empire Way South – “its old name, before a fevered battle to change it.” What happened? Well, apparently a webmaster used the Google Maps API, but as opposed to the Google Maps homepage’s Navteq data – which lists the street correctly – the Maps API’s Tele Atlas data erroneously contains the street’s old name.
On a related note, today, January 15, is Martin Luther King day. A year ago, Google displayed a special MLK logo... and so it does today, at least in the US.
Wikipedia has more on Martin Luther King day.
