The Gmail Labs added a couple of opt-in features: in-mail previews for YouTube videos, Picasa and Flickr images, and Yelp reviews. It’s a time saver, because when someone sends you e.g. a link to a YouTube video, you can now immediately click on the thumbnail shown below the message, which expands a larger clip that plays back in the same browser window.
At the same time, every cross-integration of Google products brings with it an interesting question: which non-Google products get the same integration treatment? In this case, for instance, competing product Flickr is integrated along with Google-owned Picasa... but Google-owned YouTube is the only video site integrated so far. Google in their blog post in this regards adds, “If you work on a product that would lend itself to a great preview in Gmail, we’d love to hear from you too.”
