According to The Wall Street Journal

"The company is gearing up to make a serious run at buying wireless spectrum, a chunk of the airwaves that can be used to provide mobile phone and Internet services, in a Federal Communications Commission auction in January."

We are talking about a big money; $4.6 billion or higher.

$4.6 billion only buys a tiny chunk of the airwaves. In the UK, tens of billions of pounds have been raised in a single year of airwaves auctions.

this is not news.. I posted some timeago..

http://blogoscoped.com/forum/113371.html#id113371

the dice here... is that once given "that" spectrum, then 48% of their revenue can be churned directly into the mobile space and there by, increasing frequency of ad's into mobile devices.. and thus- now a 48% ++ margin ratio.. for consumer ad's..

Catch22 – its only the FCC ..they still need to contend with asia market space.. which is tightly protected.. (read marketspace = 1.6BM mobile users) by 2020 .. and the growth ratio in the FCC space will be hardly 3.6%..thats is hardly 140M new users between now and 2020...

in short --a bad move by goog's.. wrong growth strategy :(-

Note : all numbers are fudged :)-

Making mobile versions of Google Apps is not the same thing as starting an operator business, however. They have to start with FCC.

[Moved from "Google to Go it Alone in 700 MHz Auction" – Tony]

Quote from the following article "While Google's intention to bid in the FCC's upcoming 700 MHz auction was never in much doubt, it was widely assumed it would do so by joining with various industry partners. Granted, the company certainly isn't hurting for cash these days, but given the hefty reserve prices attached to certain portions of the spectrum, it was assumed the company would want a little help. Not so, says the Wall Street Journal."
