Above-Average Amount of Gmail Spam

Is anyone else getting more spam mails lately than usual? For a couple of days, I'm seeing a lot of what I would have considered "too obvious to get through" kind of spam in my Gmail account for: viagra, enlargements, rolex replicas, and so on. It's not even hidden in image attachments, but written out as text right in the mail.

I'm almost inclined to set up a couple of my own filters – e.g. putting "rolex", "replica", "viagra", "enlargement" and so on to auto-forward to the trash, and it's not the kind of topic I'd be usually discussing in normal conversations anyway. On the other hand that might start to become a real time intensive job to keep that manual spam filter up-to-date...

No more spam for me. Actually I get less spam, (almost none) from gmail, unlike yahoo or hotmail.

If you go ahead with the manual filters, be careful which words you add. For example, "replica" and "enlargement" could easily occur in a 'real' email.

For the record, I have had around the same amount of spam, all of which went to my spam box. Check your address book for spam email addresses maybe?

I've had a couple recently – which is a couple more than usual I guess.

I had ONE in my inbox yesterday, which was the first in probably a month. My avarage detected spam is 66.5 a day* (probably quite low for most people here :D)

My spam count seems to fluctuate, in December I was getting at least 100 a day but now it seems to be down to about 20. One got through earlier this week, and I thought it was odd at the time because it has similar chacterisitics to the mails you mentioned Philipp.

<<to the trash>>
Shame there is no "mark as spam" as Google's filter will be none the wiser.

I was checking my spam folder and I saw this great contextual ad.

Nate are you sure that's the right image?

Nate,

Those spam recipes are always there. You also get recycling facts in the Trash folder.

Slightly off-topic, but as I was in my trash folder I decided to empty it. It still says: "Who needs to delete when you have over 2000 MB of storage?!"

This text needs an update it seems.

[put at-character here]stephen – Thanks, I guess I just never noticed it before (I love coder's sense of humor :)

Philipp, have you signed up with your email address at any new sites recently? I haven't seen an increase in spam on my gmail account. But my yahoo account gets those 'You've just won the UK lottery' emails about 10 times a day. Yahoo's filters never seem to catch it as spam either. :(

I just got a few more today, so it seems things must have changed for the worse.

I complained about this last month (http://blogoscoped.com/forum/116681.html#id116722). Since then, I received at least 10 other obvious spam messages.

Same amount (12-15/day) as usual for mean and all identified correctly as spam. Haven't seen spam in the inbox in quite some time.

my count is some 20/day
which is higher from past and many of them are now dropping in inbox rather than going to spambox (false positive)

I seem to have a lot more spam in my inbox the past 2 weeks.

I've seen an increase in spam the last few days. Along with the usual crapola, I'm getting more "Russian spam" ... and even though my last name ends in "Sky", I really haven't asked for it ...

Although I do receive on average 20 something spams per day .. I don't see any sudden increase in Spam in Inbox. They all are filtered properly.

I got tons of spam (3000/day!) but Gmails catches them all. I use the setup described at http://www.iopus.com/guides/gmail-spam-filter.htm
