Google's New Advanced Search Page (View post)Ionut Alex. Chitu | Thursday, March 6, 2008 16 years ago • 6,656 views |
Interesting stats from Google: more than 50% of the people who open that page leave it without completing the search. |

I can see it from here, India. See ... http://i26.tinypic.com/1iejpi.jpg Dynamic query generation is for textboxes only , it seems.
BTW, any one know why I get the following when I type just "h" into the search box? http://i32.tinypic.com/259yft2.jpg

Why not? h is Planck constant. What else would you want? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planck's_constant |

I don't see it here yet (New York) but I do like how the new interface changes my Windows machine into a Mac. ;-) |

If someone has access to the new "Advanced Search" page, save the page itself rather than an image of it. |

Here's a copy of the page:
http://blogoscoped.com/files/more/advanced-search/advanced_search.html
(All I've done is replaced the absolute image references with relative ones and added the stuff before the <html> tag to make relative links point to google.com and make it clear it's a cached copy.)

For heaven's sake, bring back the old Advanced Search page! The new one is not only annoying, but defeats the intended "ease of use". When I saw the new page my first thought was I had some web attack or some corrupt web config. Oh, it cannot be, I tried to convince myself; so my sencond thought was to swicth my home page to Yahoo or the nearest best thing I could find. |

From Tony's copy, it looks like the page is better suited for regular users than the old one, but I wonder if they'll click on "Advanced search" in the first place. Power users can use operators for most of the options included in that page. |

all that hard programming, all those M&M's, all for naught |

I finally see the new Advanced search page here in Minnesota. I kind of like the new design. It will be good for novice users as it teaches them how to make better search queries by showing them exactly what their query will look like on top when they use different options of the advanced search page.

Can now see it too... agreed, it might be a neat learning tool. |

See it here in Boulder, CO.
Advanced Google Search has been my home page for YEARS. I do extensive detailed searches and hate the new version. I need everything on one concise page allowing more than 3 "OR" options. This does not cut it.

Help! After typing something into the "exact wording" window and hit return, it automatically takes me back to the google.com home page.
Does this new design not work with Safari?

Tony Ruscoe | 16 years ago # |
It works on the PC version of Safari. |

Nathan, What version of Mac OS X are you using? Safari version +build number?
I am using Version 3.0.4 (523.12.2) on Tiger 10.4.11 and the Advanced search works fine for me. Do you have any third party plugins installed? |
Nathan | 16 years ago # |
Colin, I'm using Safari 1.3.2 on an OS 10.3.9 ...
I was thinking it may be time for an upgrade, but I'm surprised that a Google search option would be that limiting.
It does work through my Firefox, though. Odd.
Thanks, N. |
Colin Colehour | 16 years ago # |
Nathan, Google seems to require 10.4.X for most of their Mac software so maybe they don't support 10.3.9 for all services. Not sure.
Send them an email about what your experiencing.

I think the new simplified google advanced search is a step backwards. I hate having to hit the "more" link for the rest of the options I want.
Also, it is frustrating to have to relearn where to look for the options I want. They used up more screen real estate to do less. Thumbs down Google! |

The new adv search page is terrible. I used to use it for my home page, I'm looking for a new search engine. I hope Google gets the message to leave the old page in place. |
Diogenes | 16 years ago # |
The new advanced search page is not only poorly designed, but also ugly as sin! What were they smoking when they came up with it. They should go back to the old one which looked better and was much easier to use and simpler to understand. |

Bring back the old search page!!!!!!. Looked all over for the "black" page yesterday "Earth Hour" and couldn't find it anywhere except on another computer in the house. Can't stand this new one. |

Yep, it's official now via the "friends newsletter":
"POWER TIP
Advanced Search reloaded
We recently updated our advanced search page to make it easier than ever to refine and expand your query with our dynamic query builder. You can use all the same features as before, but we'll now show you a real-time view of what it looks like if you create a complex query using specific search parameters." http://www.google.com/advanced_search

Used the Advanced Search page as my home page for years. I agree with others, this new design sucks. Been an IT "pro" for a little too long and feeling burned out and not happy about having to relearn old search terminology. The only good thing about the new design is exposing the search structure. Now I'm trying to figure out how to NOT return PDF documents or NOT return results from a specific domain. Maybe we were getting too good at limiting our search results and that interfered with marketing. Do I really have to waste time (since I no longer enjoy playing on computers) learning Google Hacks just to get good search results? The new page is crap. |

Annoying. Stop "changing" the user interface google. If you people at google are bored, then update the image search to allow for MORE THAN 20 RESULTS per page (the way it's been for the past 8+ years).
