"TmoNews says that you won't be able to use the G1 without a Google Gmail account. We plan to boycott the phone for that reason alone."
...i'm really really really really hoping that's because gmail will be merging with grandcentral to manage all contacts....but i doubt it :( |

speculation about September |
I doubt that you won't be able to use the phone without a Gmail account. After all, it's a phone and phones don't require email accounts. Maybe some features require logging in using a Google account, but this is not unusual. |

Phones don't require Apple IDs either but that doesn't stop the iPhone from requiring it. |
Tony, do you have a first generation iPhone or the new 3G model? |
Colin, it's the iPhone 3G. |
If true, I'd be really interested to know how they plan to enforce something like that on such an open environment.
Seems more likely that for some of the 'cool' applications you need a Gmail login. |
I can't see them forcing Google accounts on the many phone companies that want to use the new OS. Apple doesn't force all of its 3rd party developers to use Itunes account login credentials. |
And this is an answer to Android developers signing a petition:

"We appreciate the enthusiasm of our developers and we're excited that you're so passionate about the Android platform. Thanks for taking the time to send this.
Take care, David"
Any information how is the person behind name David?

It's not an "answer", it's an "acknowledgement of receipt".
According to the TmoNews entry, the screen is 5 inches by 3 inches. That's either an error (more likely it's 5cm by 3cm), but if it's true then it's an internet tablet rather than a pocket phone. |
I really hope Google isn't actually requiring gmail. I'll settle for requiring a Google account through OpenID, and only for special features! :P |

It's a blurry video but the phone doesn't look all that great. Reminds me of a sidekick. |
And no Bluetooth: 'Bluetooth will be missing from Google Android' http://www.infoworld.com/archives/emailPrint.jsp?R=printThis&A=/article/08/08/22/Android_apps_might_not_feature_Bluetooth_1.html |
It's also going to be smaller than the iPhone 3G: http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/25/fcc-outs-htc-dreams-dimensions-its-smaller-than-the-iphone-3g/ |
