It's interesting that he didn't officially declare his run for presidency until Feb 10, 2007. But the record creation for the domain name Obama08.com shows 15 Jul 2004 07:10:38. Or is that altered because of the WhoIs privacy setting?

Looked up with this tool:

There're a loads of other stuff (some NSFW named URIs) –

Cybersquatted?

If you're really interested, you might want to investigate the historical whois info archived here (requires a fee – so I haven't done it)

So it was put up after he made his announcement on Feb 10 of that year.

I don't think the Wayback Machine is necessarily a good indicator for when a site went fully live, because it may simply not have indexed the site earlier even when it was live.

Those screenshots only display for users with Gold membership. Otherwise, you get to see a random selection from gatesfoundation.org, nasa.gov, slashdot.com, spry.com or whitehouse.com instead.

Tony when I first clicked that link I got some screenshots with e.g. McCain. Do they show the actual site the first visit even when you're not a paying member or was the McCain bit from another site?

McCain was possibly from whitehouse.com I guess:

I got spry.com screenshots when I first loaded the page.

netcraft is a good indicator, normally, check out the " first seen" date :September 2004!!

The July '04 registration would coincide with his speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. I wasn't big into politics at the time, but after seeing highlights of that speech I knew it wouldn't be long before he was pushed towards the presidency. The initial registration was probably done by someone realizing the same thing.
