Just tested the sync on my iPod Touch for contacts and Calendar... Works great!

Takes about 10 seconds to sync first time. Then push is very fast (about 2 seconds between the publishing from Google Calendar to the displaying on the ipod...)

It is funny that Google launched this today, because Microsoft is supposed to announce something similar next week!

Works great!
Well, i can only sync my contacts in the meantime, cause I have a Nokia smartphone, but as Luka said, works really fast with no problems at all.

I believe this is a huge step (even though it's very simple), and if Google will expand the service, I'm pretty sure everyone will use it.

What length of time of calendars does it sync? For example, the Blackberry version seems to be limited to 4 months back and 24 months forward.

> What length of time of calendars does it sync?

Jim, I've not tested this but the options I'm seeing on my iPhone are:

   – Events 2 Weeks Back
   – Events 1 Month Back
   – Events 3 Months Back
   – Events 6 Months Back
   – All Events

Jim Trietsch [PersonRank 1]

So, I assume then that it would be all future events? If so, this sounds real promising.

I found a interesting thing, even if google says calendar sync is not supported on Nokia S60 devices, it works!

You just have to add it to the options!

checkout my blog here, i made some screenshot aswell (Nokia e71)
but i tested it with a Nokia E51 too...

Finally you can sync your native s60 calendar with google calendar!

Cheers
Markus

I've only got events going up to December 2010 but that's good enough for me...

Jim Trietsch [PersonRank 1]

That's probably a good indicator that it really is all events. Thanks for the information.

Yeah the synchronization did work, but i can't see any of my entries on Google Calendar.. :/
Can you?

> That's probably a good indicator that it really is all events.

FWIW, those are all recurring events. I just created an event on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 and it didn't sync even when I changed to "All Events". In fact, it only synced the last 12 months then too.

So I guess "All Events" for Google Sync means the last 12 months and maybe 1-2 years or so in the future...?

Sync with/tp S60 nokias is not push, you have to initiate it manually from the phone. Works like a charm though and I think in my case it HAS synced the contact photo's.

"Microsoft My Phone works only on phones that run the Windows Mobile 6+ operating system." What a surprise, or not...

Good that Google supports open standards like SyncML. I hope Google soon will support email syncing and more like tasks, photos. SyncML is not new, my ten year old mobile had support for SyncML.

thanx for the post
i was using nuevasync to sync contacts and calendars from google account to my iphone previously (www.nuevasync.com)...
it is a free service and worked very well.. but the native google sync looks more reliable...
right now it seems to have significantly less sync glitches than nuevasync... yay

I got this to work on my Standard Edition – Google Apps account with a 1st gen iPod touch. You have to enable Google Sync before it will work, however.

To enable Google Sync, go to your admin URL (http://google.com/a/example.com) and login. Click on Service Settings > Mobile. Click the checkbox next to "Enable Google Sync" and Save the Changes. It takes about a minute for the setting to take effect. Once you do this, you should be good to go. Hope this helps.

As it is based on SyncML, I just wonder why Google does not provide interface to PC applications such as MS Outlook, though there's already a solution open source at Funambol?

Just to clarify:

I have a calendar that I have on my iCal on my mac that currently syncs to my iPhone (and broadcasts to as an extra google calendar incidently) and I also have a Google Calendar proper that I add to when I'm away from my normal laptop, and is better for collaboration etc.

Anyway, if I go for this ActiveSync I lose all my calendar data from my iCal on my mac?

Photos for contacts are indeed synced. At least in my use on an iPhone.

So Gmail Contact Photos DO sync with an iPhone?!?! That would be GREAT! Can anyone else confirm?

I see above that people have gotten their Gmail Contact Photos to sync with the their Nokia S60, and N70 phones...

Has anyone else with an iPhone gotten the Gmail Contact Photos to sync?

(I'm in the same boat as Tony – I've spent hours setting up my contacts and I don't want to mess it up unless I'm sure it's worth the risk :)

Now that we can finally merge contacts, i hope that Google will create some duplicate detector. I have a total of 1500 contacts that would be impossible to sort through (that's "all contacts", i didn't add them all myself)

Now, OggSync will keep your contacts in sync with your Outlook, Google Mail and Windows Mobile devices natively.

Does the Timezone setting in iPhone work? I used Nuevasync before, and they told me to turn off this setting.

Sam, I assume that ActiveSync will overwrite any data that's currently being synced via iTunes but I didn't test this since I had no calendar data in my iPhone already. I think the way to do it would be to import both using ActiveSync, given that you're already syncing your iCal with Google Calendar.

Hmm, I noticed that after syncing some information on a few of my contacts was lost. Contacts already existing both on my phone (phone numbers, email) and at google (only email) started to show up with only the google info and wothout the phone numbers.

Anybody else experiencing this?

Luka [PersonRank 10]

[put at-character here]atr : Sync removes ALL data on the mobile device (as warned by Google).

Photo sync works on iPhone/iPod only one way : from mobile device to Google.

>Photo sync works on iPhone/iPod only one way : from mobile device to Google.

That's weird. So if I let Google Sync delete all of my iPhone contacts and sync my Gmail Contacts with my phone, then I'll have all my Gmail Contacts on my phone, but without pictures... But then if I add pictures to my contacts – through my iPhone – It will update my Gmail Contacts with those new pictures?

FYI, having this enabled is seriously chomping away at my iPhone's battery. I used to be able to get through a whole day without hardly noticing my battery going down. Right now it's almost at 50%.
I know they said it would impact battery life but 50% seems excessive, especially when I've not made any updates to my calendar for them to push to me.

<< Google Sync works best if Push is enabled, but this will impact your battery life more than if you choose a different setting. >>

http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139202

I guess I could change it from "Push" to "Fetch" and see whether that makes a difference...

Are others finding this too?
