As for Symbian, whose dominant position is under threat owing to continuous decline in its market share, it will be able to regain its lost glory as soon as it switches to its new Open Source OS expected in 2010.

According to the report, In 2008, almost 162 million smartphones were sold, surpassing laptop sales for the first time. The analyst forecasts smartphone penetration will reach 13.5 percent of new handsets sold this year but is set to treble by 2013 – to well over a third (38 percent) of mobile devices.

It remains to be seen who will be the top contender for the Mobile OS throne in three years time. Will the iPhone juggernaut stop by then?

In 2012? That's a pretty distant prediction in tech terms, particularly given how new Android and iPhones are. A lot can change between now and then....
