Hasn't theen been on the way for a long time? As soon as Google Voice was launched they noted in the Help pages that it was not YET available and it's also listed on their submit suggestions page.

I don't understand what is new there.

The fact that Gizmodo yelled it out loud I guess. And that the first proofs are emerging.
