Used http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/silk/ for a project I am currently working on and have to say I like it slightly better. It ''only'' consists of 700 16x16 icons, but somehow it contained every icon I needed, whereas that isn't true for this icon pack. Just thought it was worth mentioning – oh and its creative commons as well – as your post felt like a rather one directional advertisement.

Yeah good pointer, I actually use FamFam too for my current project, in combination with the FatCow one...

Nice...Maybe Google should borrow some for it's My Account page. They have no clue on how to match icons with content.
