"Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, has a plan to kill Google by paying the top 1,000 sites a cool million each to leave the Google index and move to Microsoft. But could such a plan ever work, and would it be worth the risk to abandon Google?"

I wonder how this silly people has millions to waste. I lost my faith in humanity a bit more.

The problem is: the large part of the top 1,000 sites are well known by their users, so they type directly the URL in the address bar, not in Google.
They will lose visitors, but not so much after all.

Another problem is that the top 1000 sites earn much more than $1 million from Google searches. Microsoft would lose its credibility and the top 1000 sites would lose a lot of visitors.

The source article is here ...

... but if I'm reading it correctly it just contains a hypothetical math experiment, and no plan announcement of putting it to action...

For sure, that one is just hypothetical. But a closely-related one may be brewing.

It is assumed that Apple is planning to release a tablet during 2010, and it is known that various publications have been approached by Apple to develop content for the tablet on a paid-for subscription basis. For example, Conde Nast:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/19/apple-tablet-s-in-2h-2010-with-oled-screen-and-tailored-content/

There are also publishers like Murdoch who have been making a very loud fuss about Google using their news for free (even though those publishers know about robots.txt). I think Murdoch and others are sounding out alternatives.

Do you suppose that Apple has a plan to kill Google by paying the top sites to leave the Google index and move to a paid subscription model on the tablet?

Could such a plan ever work? Well yes, if the NYT was onboard. It wouldn't kill Google of course, but it would certainly kick them down a notch or two.

Microsoft has had discussions with News Corp (Murdoch) involving Microsoft paying News Corp to "de-index" it's sites from Google. So Mark Cuban's plan was not so far-fetched!
