I think all of you have heard about the iPad introduced by Apple yesterday.

What I wonder is which what kind of OS Google could respond to these new devices that will definetely come up now by other manufactures: tablets

Android OS is just positioned for mobile phones, while Chrome OS is made for netbooks. Will there be a new OS? Tablets are a kind of a mix of mobile phones and netbooks. On one hand Android will fit better because of touch capabilities, but if you see a tablet as a "internet surf device" Chrome OS would fit better.

I think Android can work on tablets. As far as I know, Android is meant to work on any device and it already supports touch screens.

ChromeOS is basically designed for tablets...

There already are CrOS mockups for a touchscreen tab interface:

It would be great to have an iPad variant with CrOS on it, but as the Apple folks said: noone else could possibly build these things yet.

But ChromeOS has disadvantages imho: No apps. And because it is completely webapp based there will be no native access to hardware ressources (except for workarounds like Flash to access your webcam, mic). And accessing the accelerometer is impossible with web based apps

<< It's possible that Chrome OS could be an easier sell on tablets than on Netbooks, the class of device on which Google said it plans to launch Chrome OS. Netbooks often are used as general-purpose PCs, so the browser-based philosophy of Chrome OS is a more jarring transition. >>

If they choose ChromeOS they will definetely give up the gaming market to apple, since these games can directly work with the hardware and touch gestures.
The success of the iPhone (and probably also ipad?!) lies in the apps and interesting concepts developed there from sleeptrackers to location based services. Things like these don't seem to be possible with a web-based OS.
