Apologies if this is old news, but I just have no idea what to search for to see if anyone else has noticed it...
In Safari, load a search results page and drag the top left hand corner image so you get the faded image following your cursor. Seems to me that Google use one image for every bit of graphics on their page, and just mask the irrelevant bits out |

Confirmed misbehavior by design also in older Safari 1.3.2, the latest (2005) version running on PowerPC OSX 10.3.9 "Tiger". |
