<< One of the first developers to create gadgets for iGoogle was Labpixies. Over the years, we worked closely together on a variety of projects, including the launch of a number of global OpenSocial based gadgets. Recently, we decided that we could do more if we were part of the same team, and as such, we're thrilled to announce the acquisition of Labpixies. >>

Wait...why? Does this seem really unnecessary to anyone else?

Facebook (or another big social company) would have acquired them in few months I bet.

Maybe this will help Google's social efforts from an app/games/widgets perspective. FB is running away with all things social/portal right now, so the big G has to keep trying new things to stay somewhat relevant in the space (if it's even still possible). Sure, they have iGoogle, Buzz, Orkut and Profiles, Friend Connect and Gmail, but nothing centralized, cohesive and sticky the way Facebook is. So, who knows, maybe these guys can help with the glue for some of those products.

Or like Tom said, maybe it's just to keep them from FB's ever-reaching tentacles.

'LabPixies acquired by Google':

"On April 2010, Google acquired LabPixies, a leading developer of personalized web gadgets "widgets" including iGoogle, Android and the iPhone. Google and LabPixies' shared focus on the user and passion for apps made this the right time to come together and an exciting opportunity to do more together for users and developers.
