This occurred to me just a few days back when I went to Yahoo Finance and started wondering why Google didn't have something similar yet. Particularly because you can currently type a symbol into search, and it gives you all the information. But the link goes to Yahoo Finance!

This is a good question Niraj. I think that its the business models that they are pursuing. Yahoo is going forward with the portal concept model, whereas Google is pursing fresh landscape within a search paradigm.
In fact many of the offical google blogs e.g. http://thegooglist.blogspot.com/ you will see the catogory "google on Yahoo Finance."
FWIW I use Yahoo Finance and its great. However google is great as my alert systems!! :)- so from a user prespective, its quite a meshmash of technology at play (at least in my playpen)

Yep, not official (from the bottom of the page): Officially, Googlist has absolutely nothing to do with Google. Unofficially, the two are entirely inextricable.
Also while Google has always seemed to be less portal-like, their rapid creation of new services is pointing towards that of Yahoo. Especially recently, there's been so many articles about how Google may be losing focus, over-extending themselves, or may get caught by surprise because they are not focusing enough on search itself.
I'm reminded of this refreshing perspective: http://blog.ask.com/2006/01/what_were_worki.html |
It looks like more will be revealed at 'Google Analyst Day' scheduled for March 2 with presentations from Google Management. Seems like a finance releated portal or service would be just the thing to present.
The press release says they'll be making the presentation available via a webcast.

The Googlist is unofficial for certain--I'll make note to clarify this for readers. Apologies for the confusion! |
