Nice post Lidwik!!
I think the main reason that Gtalk /Chat is still not yet matured is simple..here are the IM stats as on Aug /05..
AOL: 53 million MSN: 27 million Yahoo: 22 million Google: 866,000
|
I have been using Jabber since somoetime around 2000, and do not not even use the gtalk client (I use Psi). I think it is just a matter of time before Google adds the abililty for transports since yoiu have to remember that they are developiong thier own XMPP server so that it can work with the Gmail system. The other thing is that they will most likely have to reach agreements of some sort to interact with those other networks since Google carried a fair amount of weight compared to most other smaller servers out there. |
I used to use the transport at ursine.ca. It worked succesfully for a couple weeks. Then something happened on their end and all my contacts were spammed with XML errors unbeknownst to me. Furthermore, the online/offline buddy notifcation was very lagged across services.
Jabber transports will work as a solution...but you're trusting a random foreign (in this case czech?) server with a lot of your communication exchanges. I'm holding out for something better. |
you are right, well done Lidwik.
We have to remember the Lock-In strategy, that where you are, your community, is the ultimate place for you to communicate.
An important number will be how actively those users are ? How long time are they chatting, subjects, behaviour etcc...
AOL: 53 million MSN: 27 million Yahoo: 22 million Google: 866,000
Keep it up. |
You have to remember that Google is the part of Jabber network so this number (866,000) tell us only about users on one server, and not the whole network with thousands of servers. For example the second biggest web portal in Poland also has IM that works in the Jabber network, for couple of years now. Google has joined to the existing network, they don't build it from scratch, and that gives them additional user base. |
Ok,
What about skype vs Parlino vs Gtalk vs Voipstunt ? |
In My opinion Gtalk has to move Mobile Free Mobile Phone Calls supported by ads (audio, video, sms) and than we can talk about a hit.
What do u think ? |
Just a point of clarifications on the number I throw out.
This was from the Neilsen/Netratings for a Q3/05 study on IM market share. So it would be for all encompassing servers..
|
Google: 866,000 + jabber.org: 189'199 http://status.jabber.org/ + chrome.pl: 60'300 http://www.chrome.pl/ + thousends of XMPP/Jabber servers more ... |
The MSN trasnport at netlab.cz still doesnt work.. anybody got any luck with it? |
BTW, Does 866,000 include Google Talk (the application) users or talk.google.com jabber server users? You have to remember that every Gmail user has he's jabber account and uses it through Gmail Chat... |
Ludwik : not sure.. I just pulled the IM market share stat's and shared. |
> The MSN trasnport at netlab.cz still doesnt work.. > anybody got any luck with it?
I haven't tried it (don't have MSN account), but what's the problem? Did you remember to add people in USERmsn.netlab.cz format? You may also try ex. jabber.anywise.com |
Dendrite: You can trust netlab.cz, I´m from Czechia and Netlab is a serious Jabber server. :-) |
Google: 866,000 in Aug 2005 >> it was before the lanch of Gmail Chat ;) |
