Heh. Google support, in a couple of places, urges users to uninstall (their own) Gmail Notifier to get rid of some problems. At least they're honest... [Thanks Manoj!]

It's just depricated; the functionality has been replaced by gtalk. When I installed gtalk it said that it detected that gmail notifier was running and suggested that I uninstall it as it would no longer be supported |
