My favourite SF stories are those which don't spell out the premise, or the payoff, leaving the reader to ponder, or better yet to imagine. But ...

I imagined Larry and Sergey drowning their sorrows in a bar, boring the polite but sceptical bartender with stories of the rise and fall of their empire. "So where did it all go wrong?", he asked, humouring them.

Larry looked at Sergey, the pain still etched on his face as he thought about the snowballing legal and publicity troubles surrounding Orkut. "We should have realised from the Brazilian experience", he said morosely "but Eric was sure we could handle it, and was so keen to reach the same penetration in every market. And sure, at first the ad income was astounding, even by Google's standards. But then the copyright and kiddie p0rn lawsuits flooded in, buoyed up by the early huge triple-damages judgements. Advertisers began pulling out, and eventually the very name 'Google' was synonymous with everything considered unacceptable about the Net. Shareholders panicked, and employees jumped ship to where they could wear company t-shirts proudly in public."

"All because of Orkut? Wasn't that just some kind of chat site for teenagers?", asked the bartender, somewhat interested (though not enough to ask who Eric might be). "So what happened in the end?"

"So we lost everything. Yeah. Orkut", said Sergey dryly, still barely able to believe his own words.
