Look what I found: Google counts the links from PDFs.

Edit: you quote a relevant sentence, I added this bit too.

<<Google knows about more links than the total we show, but the overall fraction of links we show is much, much larger than the link: command currently offers.>>

Its an odd feature – its mostly alphabetical... except for a few at the end.
No idea what the significance of that is!

But it is great that they are finally offering this. I just killed a couple of hours discovering backlinks that send me no traffic so I didn't know about them previously :)

I just love this feature and keep play around with it. If you like it, it is important that you tell Google by clicking on the smiling face to vote.

Can anyone explain why I get much more external links to my site then using the 'link:' attribute?

Formal reason is that Google knows it's your site (you've validated it), so you're entitled to know much more about it than about some random site on the Net.

Real reason is probably that webmaster tools and main search are done by two different teams, separated by too many levels of management to get useful ideas through. :-]

It's fantastic Google have added this support... Personally I find the internal link checker really userful too.

I think the're expermenting on this feature. I don't see "External links to [mysite]", but I have under the Links tab a "Pages with external links" page.

Description of the page is: "This table provides a list of pages on http://www.genealogieonline.nl/ that have links pointing to them from other sites. Click the number in the External links column to see a sample list of links to the page. See Internal links for internal links and links from subdomains."

I'd rather have the "External links to [mysite]" version....

"Google counts the links from PDFs."
> wow! I didn't know that, gg Ionut.
I'm sure we will discover other surprises like that by looking into the lists of backlinks...

Matt Cutts in his latest post explained that "The link: command has always returned a small fraction of the backlinks that Google knows about, mainly for historical reasons (e.g. limited disk space on the machines that served up 'link:' data)."

Holy shit...

I relied too heavily on Technorati, apparently. I found hundreds more links to my blog using this. Philipp, as usual, you rock =)
