An interesting move from PayPal.

<<We are integrating PayPal into Yahoo! Search, enabling people to checkout faster and with greater security when they make online purchases. Beginning today, when you search for a product on Yahoo! Search you will see little blue shopping cart icons next to some of our merchant listings.>>

Result of the Yahoo + Ebay Deal ?

Are they serious?

That is the biggest rip-off Google ever. They don't even try to differentiate.

(And please don't say anything about Overture or IE7 + toolbars, this is a clone without innovation and clearly purposeful)

Why does it have to be a blue shopping cart? I haven't used Google Checkout all that much, I have purchased only a few things using it. I have to say it was a lot easier to use compared to Paypal.

I tried duplicating the exact query that the Yahoo Blog post performed to see if I could get the shopping cart to show up but I didn't see it.

Aren't Yahoo's colours red ?

I'm sure I've seen this picture somewhere before :-D

I couldn't get the query to give me the icon either

Yahoo! are dumb or something?
they can't be serious.
it's an exact replica of the Google Checkout's shopping cart icon.

Someone at Yahoo! is spying in-favor of Google? :P

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

I can't reproduce the icon, but it's not like Google invented shopping cart icons... though I'm curious how much the two icons look the same... the battle to secure market share via "neutral" search results continues :)

David Hetfield [PersonRank 10]

yeah but Philipp, sometimes you need to be innovative. I'm pretty sure Yahoo! knows about Google Checkout.

And I'm also sure Yahoo! designers are doing something over there.. :)

Here's what the two icons look like....Google's looks faster :)

It is interesting that the icons look similar enough that someone could be confused, especially if there's a 3rd party site (i.e. something like PriceGrabber) which tries to indicate when a retailer offers one of those options. Simply displaying the icon would no longer imply Google Checkout as it may have so far. Paypal should put a "P" on their cart or something.

[put at-character here]Phillip... yes they didn't invent shopping carts....

BUT they even call it yahoo paypal checkout.... and I mean.... that's pathetic.... seriously, so cheap....

Colin Colehour [PersonRank 10]

Right now, all of my Google Checkout links have a different image being displayed.

http://www.google.com/images/badge_pill_white.gif

Maybe this will help with relieving any confusion of the two icons.

Phillip-

They didn't invent the icon, but they were the first to include it in sponsored search results...

Niraj Sanghvi [PersonRank 10]

Colin, I don't think Google will use an image that large in the sponsored ads that appear on their results pages though. It would be too large and distracting. Up until now they have been using just the cart, we'll see if that changes.

Whoops, looks like I spoke too soon! They've changed how they display the checkout icon in both the top and side ads on results pages:

I wonder if this will actually benefit Google Checkout... Checkout is not as large as Paypal, and Yahoo is now training more users to look for the shopping cart icon when shopping online.

It looks like yahoo just gave google a big compliment.

It must be nice when you have a product so
good that every one wants to copy it.

Wow, Paypal really feel risk now, both with Yahoo.
Google eat DoubleClick just, next? So far,

I do believe its been like that for quite a while now.

Here is the scary thing though. How much will this hurt Yahoo/Paypal in the short term? Yahoo is offering users 100 dollars in advertising money and Paypal will offer no transaction fees until 12/31/2007. Google has a big bank account to do stuff like this but does Yahoo?

jilm [PersonRank 10]

Yahoo probably gain money from that deal, not pay.

I didn't get this : http://blogoscoped.com/forum/92913.html#id93034

Google changed it from a blue cart into a gray cat just because of Yahoo!'s act?

Am I right here?

Niraj Sanghvi [PersonRank 10]

James, you got me! I'm used to ignoring the ads on the search results pages :P

Try this search for dvd players philipp. I see at least one cart in the sponsored results section on the right each time i do it. Keep trying.

No, the gray and now the huge button-shaped cart is there for weeks.

According to that article I linked above, it looks like Yahoo's icon has been known since at least September of last year, so it's possible that Google made the change to their icon because of it:

See Google do still use the blue cart (look at James' SD Card query) they just don't put it on a yellow background and only use it for Froogle oneboxes!

Here's a comparitive study of over 80 shopping cart icons:
http://www.intersmash.com/300images/
(scroll to the bottom of the page)

In my opinion, none of them looks as good (or as fast) as Google's icon. Blue is a common colour for these icons.

Actuall Mrrix32 thats just a link I got fro ages ago. I can't get carts any other way
