V7ndotcom Elursrebmem

With a headline like this, you probably guessed it; there’s a new SEO contest in town. While there are dozens of SEO contests running at any given time, this one is a bit special because of the meaty price of $4,000 plus an iPod (let’s hope that prize money will indeed be paid). The goal of this contest? To be the first Google search result for the query v7ndotcom elursrebmem on Monday, May 15 2006, noon (GMT-7). The second prize is $500, and places 3-5 will get $100 each.

What are the rules to play? Participants must link back to, the contest host, in any way they like (that includes the “nofollow” way). Instead of a link, they may also include a banner or a plain text note reading “We support”.

So what do the contest keywords mean? Well, the contest host is V7n (dot-com). And the second word, if you read it backwards, results in: members rule (this is in appreciation of the V7n web development community; John Scott, who announced the contest, says “Several of the members here have been steadfast friends, with whom I discuss personal issues that I’d never discuss with people who I didn’t consider to be true friends.”).

At the moment, there are 0 results for the search keywords. Let’s check in another week to see if this contest takes off. I believe people were growing tired of SEO contests – I was – but this one may get popular with some. (Will I be participating? The answer is no. I’ve had bad experiences with these kind of contests in the past... if you’ve been reading along for some time, you probably know what I’m talking about.)

[Thanks to Alek – he’s also participating, and wants to give everything to charity.]

Update: Now that’s an interesting result: only AdWords, and no organic results.

Update 2: There’s now a Wikipedia article on the contest, and it’s being considered for deletion.

Update 3: The first SERPs are in, at least for some; I see 12,600 results for V7ndotcom Elursrebmem.

Update 4: Today’s January 24, and there are 750,000 result pages in Google for the competition keywords. In the meantime, the Wikipedia article on V7ndotcom Elursrebmem has been removed and now redirects to the SEO contest entry.

Update 5: The winners are announced.
