PINE! Amazingly, it is a very fast, efficient email application.

Then again, I cut my teeth in the business world on DEC VT terminals, so I've always had a soft spot for character-based apps....

At 700 – 800 emails a day, I guess you better use a good subject line if you want her to read your email.

Hmmmm. Gmail has switched to the newer version within the last 20 minutes and so far, I do not experience faster behaviour. quite the opposite, it takes a little while to switch labels and so on. Let's see and wait about improvements.
