new version or old one ?
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Chat/Instant-Messaging/Google-Talk.shtml |

It's new. And seemingly, they have removed the Voicemail feature. Great... one less feature for the client. |
Sankar anand | 16 years ago # |
weird isn't it ?
Not only voice mail feature, no integration of orkut and the contacts pop up display is completely changed.... |

looks like an older version to me. |

I would be a little hesistant to download Google software from a non-Google website especially when Google doesn't usually tell you the full build numbers. |

Well, the digital signature has the timestamp Nov 21, 2007 (the previous version had the timestamp Jan 2) and it's from Google Inc. You can still call people (the option is in the contextual menu or you can trigger it by clicking on the "Call" icon).
Hopefully Google will come up with something better. |

Well, i kinda hate it..
And Jared is right, the voicemail feature has been disabled for some reason.. even when you call someone and he doesn't answer..
But here are some new things:
*Now, when you click the green phone icon, it opens a new window, and initiate a call.
*After you've closed a chat window, and got back to it, the history will get a gray color.
*After you hover a contact, you no longer get options for this contact, just a window showing the contact's name, status, and email.
Anyone noticed something else? |

do u have voicemail, filetransfer and orkut integration in ur german version ?
i mean 1.0.0.105.
Anyways i switched back to 1.0.0.104.. |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 16 years ago # |
this is an earlier version pre 1.0.0.95 (that added voicemail, file transfer and music status) |
hebbet | 16 years ago # |
No, it is like the latest German version from January (1.0.0.93) |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 16 years ago # |
I said "pre 1.0.0.95". That means "before 1.0.0.95". |

Do you think they're taking away those features to add new ones? To rebuild how those features work? Get rid of them all together?
It just doesn't make sense to remove features like this, when they've received praise before. (in Google Blogs) |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 16 years ago # |
They didn't take away anything. Most likely, somebody accidentally uploaded an older version that just happens to be versioned 1.0.0.105.
It should be obvious for everybody that this version doesn't include any feature released since August 2006.

Ahh, you're right. It is a sign though that somebody on the team is working on an update, if anything.
I'm guessing with the new client, reader integration (shared items). I'd like to see Shared Stuff (S2) integrate with shared items. It seems confusing to me. |

I vote old version or a recent alpha build. Usually if you drop features you replace them with better ones or provide clever (preferably integrated) alternatives.
A beta build is meant to have some degree of feature completeness, and the voice-mail feature is not very difficult to implement from the client side (Record -> Transcode -> Secure Upload). Now the server infrastructure required to make it work is a different story and that COULD be why it's being dropped – too much work for a feature few use.
Of course, GOOG could be testing a feature-crippled version to see if people complain about removing the voice mail feature or even notice.
Better still, they could be investing in Mozilla Prism (formerly known as WebRunner) to distribute the Google Talk web client as a standalone web application. Link here: http://labs.mozilla.com/2007/10/prism/
Mind, I want an update Google Talk with features from the web client AND new features. I also want it to stay small, uncluttered and light. Then again, I am demanding ;-). Then again, Google occasionally exceeds expectations. |

What version of talk is currently downloadable from http://www.google.com/talk/ ? |
hebbet | 16 years ago # |
It is 1.0.0.104 |
Colin Colehour | 16 years ago # |
I would say, stick to the official source of the application then. You never know what you might get from a 3rd party site. |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 16 years ago # |
Colin: That file (1.0.0.105) could be downloaded from http://www.google.com/talk/intl/de/ , so it's not from an unofficial source. |
Umakanthan | 16 years ago # |
I just noticed in version 1.0.0.105 (downloaded from softpedia) has the option to set the display picture of anyone to ours
any one noticed that ?
Thanks, Umakanthan |
Avrohom Eliezer Friedman (AEF) | 16 years ago # |
you could do that in 1.0.0.104 also. |
David Hetfield | 16 years ago # |
Yeah this isn't new.. Cool feature though :) |
