More about GDrive (View post)beussery | Friday, January 30, 2009 15 years ago • 8,035 views |
“GDrive provides reliable storage for all of your files, including photos, music and documents… GDrive allows you to access your files from anywhere, anytime, and from any device – be it from your desktop, web browser or cellular phone”.
I've just blogged more here: http://www.beussery.com/blog/index.php/2009/01/gdrive/ |

Maybe it's just me, but instead of a public GDrive, I would prefer to see Google implement some kind of shareable interface/API that would allow the storage used by various Google services to sit on 3rd party services (eg DropBox). |

Nick: You're talking about App Engine: http://googleappengine.blogspot.com/2008/05/announcing-open-signups-expected.html |

Nope, I'd be pessimistic on my side, because they're still using the old terminology, which basically means that they haven't migrated the infrastructure. |

Ionut: Thanks for the info! I probably should have a better idea of what Google offers before throwing out more wishes. |

Thanks – Very interesting stuff! This made me dig a little bit too... There are some additional GDrive references in this JavaScript file that weren't in the blog post: http://pack.google.com/intl/en/compiled.js Looks like GDrive is Project ID 944 and still code-named Platypus... Here are some interesting links from the JavaScript file I mentioned above: CI_GDRIVE_LEARNMORE="https://p.corp.google.com:8443/ProjectHandler?action=ViewProject&projectId=944"; CI_GDRIVE_PRIVACY="https://manage.drive.corp.google.com/-/html/platypus/agree-windows.html"; CI_GDRIVE_HELP="https://p.corp.google.com:8443/ProjectHandler?action=ViewProject&projectId=944"; CI_GDRIVE_HOMEPAGE="https://manage.drive.corp.google.com/a/google.com/farago/?AuthEventSource=SSO"; The little GDrive icon is already on the Google Pack server: pack.google.com/images/gdrive.gif Watch for the GDrive icon to appear here as it gets closer to release: pack.google.com/sprite_gifs.gif And watch for a little GDrive screenshot to appear here as it gets closer to release: pack.google.com/sprite_jpgs.jpg When it becomes available through Google Pack, this will be the URL to download GDrive: http://pack.google.com/intl/en/installer_eula.html?ci_gdrive=on&hl=en FYI – This link used to let you directly download Google Desktop – Now it downloads Google Updater: https://www.google.com/pack/download?stub=on&ciint=ci_gds&hl=en&gl=us And this used to directly download Google Toolbar – Again, just Google Updater now: https://www.google.com/pack/download?stub=on&ciint=ci_tb&hl=en&gl=us I mentioned that because I was trying to download GDrive here, but of course it didn't work: https://www.google.com/pack/download?stub=on&ciint=ci_gdrive&hl=en&gl=us |

Olipo seems to be a Google project. http://olipo.appspot.com/book/ Is it Google related? |

On a related note:
Remember The Googley Blues video from 2007 (http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2007-08-17-n10.html)? The song said, "I’ve been ready to launch my product since 2002...At least round here 5 years ain’t so long overdue." -And it showed the Platypus...
Well, a new version of The Googley Blues video was uploaded to YouTube on August 8, 2008 – With the Platypus edited out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfbJtJqEXLY
And here's a copy of the original Googley Blues video from 2007: http://googlified.com/files/videos/googley-blues.html

Interestingly, a snippet from Philipp's post suggests this url is a goer: https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/google.com/Users
On trying it, it seems to respond as a valid GAFYD domain. Does that mean that www.google.com/search is a GAE app?? ;-) |

I had actually retrieved everything inside that PDF using Yahoo! snippets except for the five bullet points in the "How to Share" section and the "How to Sync Shared Files to your computer in GDrive client" title, so it does make me wonder whether this PDF is the original document distributed by Google internally or whether it was just recompiled using other sources on the web.

On related news, Google now has a bug which flagged every site (including Google!) as containing malware: http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/5660/screenshotod3.png |

So does GDrive mean I can upload and safely store my entire iTunes library? (Which would take, what, a week?) 5214 songs, 19.6 GB. And I can do that? |

Google has now removed ALL references to GDrive in both of these JavaScript files...
http://pack.google.com/cistrings.js
http://pack.google.com/intl/en/compiled.js

This little GDrive icon is removed now too...

KMB | 15 years ago # |
You're talking about Google Pack. Gdrive is still referenced and live in all other Google files. |
beussery | 15 years ago # |
KMB Which files, got URLs???????? |
KMB | 15 years ago # |
In a previous thread, that is now locked by someone. http://blogoscoped.com/forum/149002.html |
beussery | 15 years ago # |
ahhh, thought you meant new URLs.... |
mbegin | 15 years ago # |
KMB I was specifically talking about the term "GDrive" and the detailed information that was found in those JavaScript files...
The Google Apps CSS file mentions "Google Webdrive" but never specifically calls it "GDrive".
Even the image is called "webdrive": www.google.com/a/cpanel/resources/img/img/mini_webdrive.gif
Surely, they're the same thing, but it's interesting that they pulled the info from those JavaScript files and removed the GDrive icon from the Google Pack server... |

I've writted an article on our blog inspired by this post (don't worry I've linked back!). I've touched on more of the privacy and information security issues surrounding GDrive.
http://blog.fluidcreativity.co.uk/index.php/googles-gdrive-is-it-secret-is-it-safe/
Would be interested on hearing your thoughts. I'm trying to get some input from professionals in the infosec arena too. |
