Currently (on one of my sites) we spend our advertising efforts on people who are looking for a specific product like a "case for an iPhone 3g"
If I had a million to spend however, I would very likely try to work on our brand (thecellguru) and try to convince the world that we are simply the de facto standard for cellular accessories. |
I would buy ads on searches for abortion services. I would be advertising adoption services and financial support for single moms. |
I'd advertise a white box, that links to a page saying "That wasn't an ad! Enjoy having some extra white space/less clutter while you browse!". Of course, I would have a link to http://derryquinn.com on the page AFTER you click the white box so people know who made it possible or whatever. :) |

I'm a professional Google AdWords specialist with few hundred customers in last few years, and my general recommendation to every client is – you can invest any money, if you recieve more money back. So actually it does not matter what to advertise, everything can be done so that you recieve more money out of the campaign – just for some things it would return in few weeks, for many others in many years. So the question is "how fast i have to invest it".
If the question is "what is the product, where you can invest your big money fastest (effectively)", it is probably traveling (hotel databases ...) – the point is to advertise internationaly – local market is quite small (here in czech republic with 10 MIO inhabitants very small), but global is far interesting.
If the question is "where i would put 1 MIO campaign with no income out of it", then i would select something like red-cross etc.
