I wonder why they choose Dallas and so close to the "boring lava field"
at anytime a volcano may erupt in that area.. ..but a high cost DC in a natural unstable terrian ? I dont they did a complete due diligence process.

I wonder what type of Infrastructure risk assessment was prior to chosing this location :)-

Never stood still that all that infrastructure needs a real building to sit in. A huge one that is. It's already very difficult to manage a moderate datacenter. It's a wonder that they keep managing all of that.

I heard they use a lot of second hand materials that they all connect with their own operating system. Does anyone knows more of that?

I've seen though that they are using also Sun Microsystems equipment. Is this correct? And how does this stands to the fact of using second hand equipment?

Google taking over the world like the borg or like in the matrix is right now the smaller problem. The more important question currently, for all the webmasters and businesses globally, is how to deal with differnet data centers showing differnet results. Lately, for two weeks already, there are two different results online, half of the data centers showing old ones half apparently new. So searching for your keyword on Google your site might be in the top 10 once and unfindable next time while Google is accesing once the old data and once the new. This is especially daunting as the data differ substantially.

Well, webmasters are used to drop out of Google for no apparent reason by now after an update, but now they grapple to deal with not knowing whether they really dropped out or not.

I'd say the coming tiered internet is the bigger problem, and that datacenters like these are part of Google's way of getting around it – i.e. put a containerized datacenter at every peering point in the US, and one of these babies in say 8 places in the US, and in network terms, you'll be so close to all netizens that the ISP's won't be able to slow you down, much.

All the same ... Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, NSA having giant datacenters in a small region?

Can you say "giant freaking target"? Think nuke ... or simply EMP (a.k.a. e-bomb) ... and with that in mind, I wonder how well these datacenters are hardened against *these* kinds of threats.

The Dalles is not close to any potential volcano impacts other that ash. It is a very stable geological area and a good place to locate this infrastructure.

Garett'ss post on Google and IP6 got me thinking http://blogs.zdnet.com/Google/wp-trackback.php?p=241
While digging around the Arin database (not sure how reliable these records are) I noticed an old favorite, MarkMonitor. Oddly though, it seems that another company has overlaping IP address, AboveNet (http://www.abovenet.com). What is above net? "AboveNet, Inc. provides fiber connectivity solutions for businesses. With more than 1.5 million fiber miles deployed globally, its private optical network delivers key network and IP services in and between 14 top U.S. metro markets and London" A little more digging and it seems that Google and Abovenet also share some IP space (http://ws.arin.net/whois/?queryinput=64.124.112.24). While checking the Abovenet web site, they list a "fiber map", which has fiber runs right next to the mountain view site and the dallas sight (those are the only two I've checked so far). Like I said before, I'm not 100% sure on the accuracy of the Arin database, but there seems to be strong connections between abovenet and Google fiber ambitions.

Hello! An American firm will set up a huge European data center in Switzerland, area is "Valais", city is: "Collombey", number of employees: around 900 high-qualified persons.
Do somebody know the name of this firm ? My suppositions are, but I am not sure: Ibm, Apple, Google, Yahoo or Microsoft ?
Thank you for any information ...
