Sure looks glossy...
I guess I'll stick with XP.

I'm sticking with XP. BTW Vista comes out tomorrow in the UK. For some reason MSFT don't seem to know how to convert prices, replacing $ with £ dosn't make the prices the same.
eg. USA – Vista Ultimate – $249.99 (£127)
   UK – Vista Ultimate – £249.99 ($490)
(prices from Amazon.co.uk/.com)
And there's no way shipping can cost £127!

Systembuilder? 190 Euro for Ultimate.

But Vista is to new for me at the moment.

Big deal...
Linux has those shiny 3D and transparency effects (and many more) for almost a year.
Moreover, it doesn't cost up to 500€ (that will be the highest price in France)

Download the iso, burn it and reboot your computer. You'll have a nice gui to divide your partition to make room for Linux along Windows.

And yay, I've now got a PR10!

oh, sorry I though you meant it was out now.
A few more prices (converted to US Dollars for ease of use):
USA- $250
UK- $490
Canada- $422
France- $742 (is this right?)
Japan- $380

youre talking about " Vista Ultimate " ?

Like Pierre, I'm using Linux too. But my kids are disadvantaged because their schoolteachers only know Windows and use proprietary Microsoft formats for data exchange. This, and this alone, might make me buy Vista.

<<proprietary Microsoft formats for data exchange>>

Do you mean Office docs? You can use OpenOffice, Google Docs for that.

David Hetfield [PersonRank 10]

yeah.. Ionut is right..

though working with Open Office is not the same as working with MS Word...
(im speaking for myself.. i dont know what about others...)

but its still worth downloading.. and i still like it!
its free, its safer, its good, almost like MS Word..
you need more? ;)

Yeah, sorry. I said in my first post but forgot to in the second. I assume that the changes in price are similar across the versions.

oh..
Microsoft Israel hasnt posted yet its price in Israel..
but i assume it'll be about 450-500$.. :/

Ionut, OpenOffice only goes so far. It can't execute Excel macros, for example (and even not some of Excel's formulas).

But the office documents are not the main problem. What do I tell my daughter to do when she brings back a Microsoft Publisher file, for example?

When the kids bring home BMP files, they can edit them under Linux using GIMP. But sometimes they save their GIMP files in PNG, a format with an open specification that can be read by some Microsoft programs but not by some of the math and science packages that they use in school.

And kids love to mess with embedding sound and video. Sure I can tell my daughter to ask her teacher whether there is an option to convert a sound file to Ogg Vorbis format before embedding it, but even if my daughter would understand what this means, her teacher doesn't.

It's a bit like a driving school insisting that you buy a Toyota before they will teach you to drive. If you insist on wanting to drive a Honda your teachers will allow you, but always blame the Honda for any problems that you encounter (rather than blaming their own dependency on items that are proprietary to one particular vendor).

OK, off my soapbox now.

On top of all that, the teachers have been told to teach the kids that it's bad to copy data, music etc. Most of the teachers don't know about Creative Commons, the GPL, etc.

So I give my kids files that are OK to copy, and tell them that they can freely share their files with others at school, and then the kids get into trouble at school because the school's anti-piracy policies can't cope with (and don't know about) things like Creative Commons.

Sorry, didn't mean to turn this thread into a rant. I'm really off my soapbox now.

Roger is 100% right..
And heres where Microsoft's Monopoly kicks in..

Microsoft's strategy is working well!
if people like Roger here thinks about their children (or in simple words, not being normal) Microsoft will continue its growth for all eternity.

But, if we'll say no to Microsoft, and we will not buy a new operating system which costs more than 250$ or, a new Office, someday, Microsoft will just have to face a world of a lot more personal users and businesses who uses Linux, Firefox, Open Office and so forth.

My question is,
can we make this happen?
im positive.
when?
regretfully, not in the near future. :/
