Weird new Gmail quotaNiraj Sanghvi | Friday, October 12, 2007 16 years ago • 14,643 views |
The quotas on the Gmail login page added two entries for 43,008MB and Number.MAX_VALUE:
var CP = [ [ 1175414400000, 2835], [ 1192176000000, 2912], [ 1193122800000, 4321], [ 1199433600000, 6283], [ 2147328000000, 43008], [ 46893711600000, Number.MAX_VALUE] ];
But the date for reaching 43,008 MB is over 368 months away! |
Haochi | 16 years ago # |
LOL, saw that too! Normally I don't go to look at that stuff, but the login page I got was pretty weird so I decided to take a peek.

I found out that a different "GMAIL_RTT" cookie value (integer) will trigger a different template. |

>>But the date for reaching 43,008 MB is over 368 months away!
That's over 1GB/year. |
Mrrix32 | 16 years ago # |
>> That's over 1GB/year.
So it's sped up then??? |

Confirmed in Official Gmail Blog:

[moved from new thread]
Counter is fairly fast now
Related to possible new gmail design? |

WOW!!
I just checked my google apps premier account.
You are currently using 662 MB (2%) of your 25600 MB.
thats awesome!! |
James Xuan | 16 years ago # |
Haochi you're on Techcrunch! http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/10/12/windows-live-skydrive-doubles-storage-to-1gb-still-cant-keep-up-with-gmail/
|
Luka | 16 years ago # |
My account used to be a 6Go (remember i paid it 1$ ...) and now it is a 10Go... So I checked my account and plans have changed too : 6 Go -> 10 Go = 20 $ 25 Go -> 40 Go = 75 $ 100 Go -> 150 Go = 250 $ 250 Go -> 400 Go = 500 $
|
James Xuan | 16 years ago # |
Whats a go? |

Official Word http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2007/10/more-gmail-storage-coming-for-all.html |
Mrrix32 | 16 years ago # |
Holy S*** it's going up fast. It was around 1mb a day before wasn't it? |
Mrrix32 | 16 years ago # |
Oh and James: http://blogoscoped.com/forum/111060.html#id111089 |
Stephen Tordoff | 16 years ago # |
Not long to 3gb now, I wonder if Google will celebrate in some way.
Maybe the counter has sped up to coincide with a planned event |
Niraj Sanghvi | 16 years ago # |
I'm guessing it's more likely they reached some threshold of users using some percentage of their storage space. That and the fact that Yahoo switched to unlimited storage a few months back. |
jammarlibre | 16 years ago # |
Good morning Thanks for your site. |
Juha-Matti Laurio | 16 years ago # |
PC World coverage is located here:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,138378-c,email/article.html
pointing to official Gmail Blog and stating this: "On Friday, the counter on the Gmail login page stood at more than 2,935M bytes, or about 2.9G bytes, of storage, and was rising – but the counter is an illustration rather than a hard limit." |
Mrrix32 | 16 years ago # |
Sorry just read Lifehacker... 6GB by January!!!! Only 27MB to go to the big 3GB :D |
Mrrix32 | 16 years ago # |
Seems to be going up 1MB ~10 min so If I'm right* ~4 hours to 3GB!!!! (1AM UK time)
*And I'm probably not. |
DPic | 16 years ago # |
Sweet! What about paid storage? Is there any change in pricing or how much you get for the same amount of money? |
James Xuan | 16 years ago # |
http://blogoscoped.com/forum/111060.html#id111160 Oh rite...
Oh and Martin http://blogoscoped.com/forum/111060.html#id111171 There are 3072mb in 3 GB, not 3000, so there are 92 megabytes to go, which is like 15 hours. |
Haochi | 16 years ago # |
Martin is pretty close, just change AM to PM. :)
The current rate (according to the givens) is ~5.36MB/hr and it will reach 3GB (3072MB) at around Oct 13 2007 13:51 GMT. |
Stephen Tordoff | 16 years ago # |
Just noticed that the counter says 2983MB, but when I log in:
"You are currently using 54 MB (1%) of your 2911 MB" |
Mrrix32 | 16 years ago # |
Hey I'm tired, and I said I was probably wrong :D |
James Xuan | 16 years ago # |
http://blogoscoped.com/forum/111060.html#id111180 Yeah, same here
http://blogoscoped.com/forum/111060.html#id111183 There's no excuse for a man who killed the cow because he didn't know the milking technique.(that's my old irish made-up proverb for, think before you speak/Don't be lazy/ GO BACK AND STUDY YOUR MATHS!!!) |
Mambo | 16 years ago # |
The log-in page has gone over the 3,000MB mark now. |
Colin Colehour | 16 years ago # |
Mambo, your right. I just noticed that tonight.
<< Over 3007.098535 megabytes (and counting) of free storage so you'll never need to delete another message. >>
But this is what I see when I log into my account: You are currently using 414 MB (14%) of your 2936 MB.
|
Mrrix32 | 16 years ago # |
James I got a B in GCSE Maths a few months ago, God help the people who got less than me :D
I'm just worried about how you kill a cow by milking it incorrectly :-/ |
James Xuan | 16 years ago # |
Not much to go till 3GB Now! 3045 ATM! |
David Hetfield | 16 years ago # |
My Gmail says: " You are currently using 431 MB (14%) of your 3051 MB."
Though the manage account storage page gives me a different amount, "Gmail 2.98 GB 0.42 GB (14%) in use "
https://www.google.com/accounts/ManageStorage |
Keith Chan | 16 years ago # |
The manage account storage page has always been lagging behind the real storage ... |
David Hetfield | 16 years ago # |
You're right. Let's give it 24 hours. :) |
David Hetfield | 16 years ago # |
By the way... The counter in the Gmail log-in page is growing rapidly fast!
I guess Google is up to something... |
James Xuan | 16 years ago # |
*Hummms mission impossible theme* |
Mambo | 16 years ago # |
At this rate, I think this is technically better than the supposed "unlimited storage" that has a fair usage policy attached (such as Yahoo Mail); it gives you a definite figure that they are guaranteed of being able to use. |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 16 years ago # |
Mambo: Nope. This rate of growth won't stay like this too much. Gmail will have 6GB on January 4 and you'll get a new GB a year. If you use more than 1GB / year, you'll still need more storage at some point. |
David Hetfield | 16 years ago # |
Yes, i agree with Ionut.
They can't keep this rapid growth for too long. |
Stephen Tordoff | 16 years ago # |
I guess that they probably can keep this going for a long time, as the majority of users will not reach even the current value |
Hong Xiaowan | 16 years ago # |
I just want a safe fast easy gmail. 2G is enough for me, for my business account, 0.2G OK. |
David Hetfield | 16 years ago # |
Stephen I'm not saying Google won't handle the pressure of increasing the storage that fast. I'm just saying they shouldn't be doing that. |
Juha-Matti Laurio | 16 years ago # |
The recent state:
"Lots of space Over 3092.150735 megabytes (and counting)"

stefan2904 | 16 years ago # |
Btw: "You are currently using 468 MB (15%) of your 3092 MB." |
Stephen Tordoff | 16 years ago # |
Something is weird with Google's quota monitor. Mine still says 3042MB, yet the main page and Stefan say 3092MB.
(I'm not complaining about 50MB, just seems a little strange) |
Martin Porcheron | 16 years ago # |
I'm on 2093MB now. It's probably just server fluctuations. (What actually happens when you reach your limit?) |
David Hetfield | 16 years ago # |
Me too Stephen. The counter says 3094 and i got 3054.. |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 16 years ago # |
stefan: Hmm... That graph seems familiar.
everyone else: the homepage counter is some JS code, while the number from the bottom of Gmail's inbox is from the server and it's not continuously updated. I wouldn't worry about those numbers. Gmail probably already allows you to use 4 GB or more. |
Mysterius | 16 years ago # |
The counter just passed 3100... |
James Xuan | 16 years ago # |
Yay 3GB!!! |
Martin Porcheron | 16 years ago # |
Actually, having logged into another account I found that its limit it is currently limited to 3054 where as my personal account is increasing (now at 3113MB).
Seems to be random on who has the fixed limit. |
stefan2904 | 16 years ago # |
You are currently using 469 MB (15%) of your 3098 MB. |
Haochi | 16 years ago # |
"0.4 GB (2%) of 13 GB" – It won't last long though. |
David Hetfield | 16 years ago # |
Tom has the same amount? |
rgjdk | 16 years ago # |
[moved from new thread "My gmail shows 3gb+" -Philipp]
Hi
My gmail shows 3gb and counting. It didn't yesterday ... did it?
rgjdk |
Mrrix32 | 16 years ago # |
Last time I posted I didn't even have 3gb space on my account, I go away for a weekend and I have 3 gb FRE. (I would say I don't have much mail but try fitting 160MB of mail into a single "Old Style" Hotmail account without paying) |
Mrrix32 | 16 years ago # |
Missed out an 'E' and the word 'nearly' (before James jumps in and says that we haven't got to 160MB over 3GB yet :D) |
James Xuan | 16 years ago # |
:D |
David Hetfield | 16 years ago # |
Question, Does anyone know why they're doing this?
(I don't think it's for beating competition..) |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 16 years ago # |
To catch up with the competition. |
David Hetfield | 16 years ago # |
Catch up? huh?
Can you provide any further information please Ionut? |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 16 years ago # |
Of course: http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2007/08/gmail-top-web-mail-service-with-least.html |
David Hetfield | 16 years ago # |
Gmail infinity+1 has less than 3GB.. https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=mail<mpl=wyze
lol.. :)
Oh, Thanks Ionut :) |
MarWi | 16 years ago # |
I have got 25 GB with my Apps accounts now...
I really start to wonder what percentage of world hard disk supply goes to Google...Any guesses? |
Sohil | 16 years ago # |
Even 1% seems a bit too high... |
Mrrix32 | 16 years ago # |
Up to 3.5 GB now! :) (3584MB) My account usage has gone down by 1% since this started going faster (I haven't deleted anything :D) |
DPic | 16 years ago # |
Up to 4 GB now! |
Manoj Nahar | 16 years ago # |
4.109 GB for me now. |
Travis Harris | 16 years ago # |
4249.22 |
Travis Harris | 16 years ago # |
Now that Google for your domain is giving as much space as Gmail, I would like to move over. Does anyone know a quick and Dirty way to move all my Emails (with labels) over? |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 16 years ago # |
http://www.limitnone.com/products.php?p=gxfer
Note: Only emails that were automatically labeled will be labeled in the new account (i.e. labels created through filters). Emails that were manually labeled will NOT come through with a label. |
Travis Harris | 16 years ago # |
wow.... I am totally in awe of how easy that is.... it has been running for a while, as I imagine it will....
is there anything similar for Docs and calanders? |
Travis Harris | 16 years ago # |
I see it did the calendar.... this is Great! Looks like the Emails are going to take quite some time to move over... I have through October 2004 moved at the moment :)
Thank you soooo much! |
Travis Harris | 16 years ago # |
well..... it is to December 2004 now.... I'm guessing this is going to take some time! |
Travis Harris | 16 years ago # |
been around 21 hours now and it finally got to August 2005
That's okay though, It is working well |
Travis Harris | 16 years ago # |
alright..... we are nearing the 48 hour mark, and we are up to december 2005. The kicker here is.... my Gmail address just got Imap support and my Apps for your domain did not!
Dang!!!
Ohh well :) |
James Xuan | 16 years ago # |
No matter how many times you post it always says "75 comments" |
RC | 16 years ago # |
my acct just crossed 5000mb.. wow.
less than 2 years ago, yahoo used to offer 10mb accounts. |
Pri | 16 years ago # |
IT DID!! I have 5008 MB!! woohoo! I don't know what kind of math they are using to increase the storage, but I like this fuzzy math... |
David Hetfield | 16 years ago # |
Google math :) |
